Are Indigo Children Really Just Assholes?

I’d heard about the Indigo movement a couple years ago and was intrigued. It is framed as a new evolution of the human species and includes children with a set of evolved qualities that make them the spiritual warriors of the planet. Among the more trying characteristics:

  • Have difficulty with discipline and authority
  • Refuse to follow orders or directions
  • Find it torture to wait in lines, lack patience
  • Are often identified or suspected of having ADD or ADHD, but can focus when they want to
  • Have very old, deep, wise looking eyes
  • Often express anger outwardly rather than inwardly and may have trouble with rage.
  • Are here to change the world – to help us live in greater harmony and peace with one another and to raise the vibration of the planet.

How can you tell if your child is an Indigo or just being a tempermental banshee?

I have found that almost 90% are raised by single mothers.

You don’t say. A single-parent having trouble meeting the needs of their kids and then creating an excuse for why Timmy Can’t Stop Screaming? Is this the ADD/HD diagnosis/trend gone awry?

Men often cannot understand the spiritual aspect of this issue and want to break the “spirit” of the child, so they will behave according to “norms”.

Considering the way men are socialized to be fathers… Ugh. This just seems like smothering mothering to me and enabling and catering to your child’s every need. Oh and there’s also a whole thread of thought on adult Indigos to help explain why you’ve been misunderstood all these years. Also includes connections to astrology and angels.

I think a lot of these kids are just being kids, some of them have undiagnosed ADHD, and the vast majority of them are unfortunately the children of rich, white parents who need to feel special — if not about themselves, then about their kids.

Too funny. Did you write this in response to the Indigo children mentioned on that “Psychic Children” show on tv over the weekend? Higher harmony or not, I agree with Jen…speaking from experience with that demographic:)
    Love the headline!

I totally missed that angle Jennifer – but you’re right. I don’t see any non-white women on the indigo site. Is this another case of confusing the trials of being a middle class, white mother with motherhood in toto. I think if the kids were in a black, asian or latino household it’d be ‘You sit your ass down and stop acting like an idiot.’ Or as my mom would say, ‘Ya know, you look really stupid right now.’

I think that some parents are too busy, too lazy, and don’t have the time to spend the time they need with their kids and properly discipline them. We have seen the difference of kids our in town (the latch key kids) that get no interaction time with their parents. They are brats who think the world owes them a favor.
That makes me pretty scared about what kind of world our kids are growing up into.
I say want to change the world — start with shaping the kids so they grow to be loving responsible adults.

Maybe so, Andy, but that’s part of the problem. We’re perpetuating the status quo, if not worsening it. As Einstein said, “A problem can not be solved at the same level of consciousness at which it was created.”
The flip side of the way you’re looking at it… the apparent incidence of these children in white, upper-middle-class households is a matter of exposure, awareness and receptiveness to the concept, not a mis-labeling of “normal” trials of being a white middle class working mother with a difficult child and a physically or emotionally absent father.
There is a high correlation (not causation) between poverty and religious fundamentalism. If you walk into a Unitarian Universalist church, Religious Science group, Unity church, IONS group, etc., the unfortunate reality is that it is not as diverse as the general population. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. People aren’t going to spend any time thinking about the higher consciousness of their children when they’re worred about how to put food on the table and keep the electricity on.
Anyway, we knew there was something really unusual about our son long before we ever even heard of the concept of “indigo children”. Out of respect for his privacy and so as not to take up too much space here, I won’t tell the stories, but we “just knew”. That’s why we decided to homeschool and are really glad we did — it’s been a great experience for all of us.
Is he “indigo”? Don’t know, don’t care. But he’s definitely different, in a good way, as are many of his friends. I certainly hope that they are our future, for I’d rather live in the world they would create than in the one we’re in right now.

Wow sometimes your posts really piss me off…and then makes me think. Good job. IMHO children are suffering from Nature deficit disorder from a lack of play time in nature.
Indigo’s or the energy of indigo is that stuff Dan Pearl writes about in his book “A Whole New Mindâ€? the creative right brain balanced with logic. To be creative (like yourself) that freedom must be nurtured. There are no woods to run and play and just be a kid like there used to be. I don’t know where you got the source that 90% are being raised by single mothers. Would you mind sharing that link?
What I do know is our daughter is highly intuitive and I considered her an indigo, and I am not a single mother…all children are indigos. The trap is thinking she was special… Think about it, what is an indigo but a highly creative person! The goal is to get through school with that creative self intact. It was Mom (me) who needed to heal and reclaim her spirit and creativity, then I could parent a healthy child.
Through schooling my left brain, logical thinking was favored more that the right brain-creative thinking (Indigo thinking). These kid’s are part of the change needed in our educational system. That’s a good thing.
Maybe culturally we are called to recognize the importance of the feminine side (intuitive) and thus labeling it ‘indigo’. I don’t know and I don’t really care what one calls it.
All of the children, not just some of the children are indigos. I look at it as a level of consciousness and each generation goes through it in their own way. In the age of marketing someone decided to put a label on the concept, package it and then market the concept to parents.
Does it mean that children should be rude or act out. NO. Should we medicate? NO Should parents glamorize it. NO
What I see in parent’s suffering from “indigo illusionâ€?. What is needed is a strong dose of humility from all parents who claim “You’re so special (child) because I’m not (parent).â€? It’s there I see it all the time in my practice because I healed it in myself. If this makes the parents wake up to their own healing then the indigo movement is a good thing.

Okay, this headline both pissed me off and made me chuckle. I’m an intuitive consultant and I do Soul profiles all day long. So, I can assure you that there are some highly evolved Souls being born into physical bodies these days. Although “indigo children” is really a catch phrase for various things.
And, it seems that every mom I talk to (which is many, since I have a 15-month old myself) thinks her child is an “indigo” – most of the time I can assure them they aren’t.
Having said that, the very high-tone, spiritually evolved Souls (in kids anywhere from age 15 to infant) do need some understanding and have to be taught a little differently. Which doesn’t mean that unsocial behavior is acceptable.

    Hello
It’s just so easy to cast us Indigos and Crystals off as assholes, isn’t it? I’m an Adult Indigo, and a father to two Indigo Children and one Crystal child.

I think anyone who uses the words “children” and “assholes” in the same sentence has some really serious mental issues.
