Windows Users Face Vulnerability

A Windows vulnerability that is as simple as displaying an image can allow code to be executed on your PC without your permission. This is burning up the discussion boards right now and dozens of exploits have been found on the net to take advantage of this security hole. All versions of Windows have this weakness.
Here’s Microft’s advice: unregister the DLL.
To un-register Shimgvw.dll, follow these steps: (these instructions are directly from the site – I accept no liability for these instructions)

1. Click Start, click Run, type “regsvr32 -u %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll” (without the quotation marks), and then click OK.
2. A dialog box appears to confirm that the un-registration process has succeeded. Click OK to close the dialog box.

I’m not sure if you have to do this every time you boot your machine. There is an unofficial patch that is being endorsed on lots of security sites – you can uninstall if it causes you problems.
Mac users have been instructed to remain smug.
