Emails from Adoring Readers

One of the benefits of having an email newsletter is adoring remarks like

STOP SENDING ME YOUR DAMN EMAILS NOW. TRASH, FRAUD

I really think ‘Sincerely, Fraud’ would have been much more elegant.
It never ceases to amaze me that they don’t see the big fat throbbing Unsubscribe link that accompanies every ezine. An ezine that they opted-in to receive.
What’s your favorite abusive email from an adoring ezine reader?

“What the hell does this have to do with living with an illness? Maybe if you had one, you’d have something interesting to say.” (Jan 13 06)
(I guess my 14 1/2 yr with hiv isn’t enough)

My recent favorite was a subscriber who complained that I was “ripping him off” because he didn’t get his copy of my newsletter. My FREE newsletter. That was in his spam filter. 🙂

My worst is not fit to be printed. You would have to bleep 90% of the words. 🙂

Oh hey, this one actually stung:
“I will make sure to unsubscribe to your newsletter ASAP and tell my friends to do the same. BTW- don’t bother calling, I don’t have 5 minutes for you either.”
This after requesting just a “few minutes” of my time to “help” with a new home study course they created, and rather than say no (because I liked the guy’s website), I had my assistant ask for a specific time – more specific than:
“Anytime from 8am to 8pm PST, any weekday, would be a fine time to call.”
Sigh. But actually, on a regular basis I don’t get a lot of ick mail, thank goodness.

At About.com, I get one of these nearly every week, ranging from the simple:

    I dont want this!

    to the overly gracious:

Hi I am just wondering if you would be able to stop sending me emails as i signed up for this for information on a assignment, since then i hve left that school and am wondering if you would be able to follow my wishes.

to the downright rude and threatening (not to mention idiotic):

PLEASE DONT SENT ME YOUR LETTERS ANYMORE. WHERE DID WE SIGNED AN AGREEMENT THAT PERMITS YOU TO SENT ME YOUR LETTERS? DO IT BEFORE I BLOCK ALL YOUR LETTERS

I politely tell them that there’s an unsubscribe link at the bottom of every newsletter, it’s an automated system, and that in fact I can’t unsubscribe them, but that as part of The New York Times Company, we take spam compliance very seriously, and I assured them that the unsubscribe link actually work. Only once did I ever hear from someone again (twice more, both of which I replied to essentially the same way).
